August 2007 - GM
David Howell receives a certificate from ECF President Gerry
Walsh as the first recipient of the John Robinson
Fellowship. |
The Trust was created
following the death of
much-loved
Senior ECF Arbiter and International Arbiter
John Robinson in February 2006. He generously left substantial
bequests to the British Chess Federation.
The criteria for the Trust is primarily to advance chess education
and supervision for those under the age of twenty one. It also
includes students attending schools, universities and other
educational establishments in England.
The Council of the British Chess Federation agreed to establish a
Charitable Trust on the basis that the capital of the Trust should
be maintained. The Trustees are Gerry Walsh, David Welch, Cynthia
Gurney and David Anderton.
About John, David Welch Tournament Director and former chess colleague writes,
"John was awarded
the Boxall Salver for his work on the British Championship team and,
more recently, the President’s Award for Services to Chess. Far more
important was his appreciation of his friends and his real sense of
humour. I have never met a person so genuine and dedicated as John
was. It has been a privilege to know him."

The Fellowship is awarded annually by the ECF to the most talented
English player, male or female, under the age of 21. The fellow will
receive at least £2,000 to support their playing activities over the
following year and will either be a grandmaster already, or have
realistic aspirations to the grandmaster title.
